Vincent J. Musi likes to talk to an animal right before he shoots it.

A photographer specializing in animal portraiture for National Geographic magazine, Vincent's work takes a quirky look at our relationship to animals through the world of exotic pets, domestication, and cognition. Over the last 30 years he has  also taken the approach of a generalist, with photographic essays covering volcanoes, mummies, landscapes, sports, culture, hurricanes, history, and archaeology.

His path to photographing animals began when he bought a house that was inhabited by many, many creatures. He has since learned to be an animal photographer and likes it, despite the fact that his subjects growl, bark, roar, bite, hiss, claw, poop, and pee on him.

The 2015 Festival is curated by Kathy Ryan, Director of Photography at The New York Times Magazine and Scott Thode, independent curator.
