TREES EXHIBIT: THE PHOTO ARK Half of all the species on Earth could be headed irreversibly toward extinction by 2100. Not if Joel Sartore can help it. That was the idea behind the Photo Ark project and TREES exhibit: getting the public to look these creatures in the eye, and care enough to save them while there is still time. "My goal is to photograph as many of the world's captive species as I can before time runs out" states Joel. "I'm at about 3,500 now, and just getting started. I work mostly at zoos and aquariums, today's keepers of the kingdom. Many species would already be gone without their heroic captive-breeding efforts." In Joel's words, “It is folly to think that we can destroy one species and ecosystem after another and not affect humanity. ARTIST'S TALK: THE PHOTO ARK The artist's talk featuring Joel Sartore was held at the Paramount Theater on June 18th to near sold-out house.
Joel Sartore
Joel Sartore is a photographer, speaker, author, teacher, conservationist, and National Geographic Fellow. He specializes in documenting endangered species and landscapes. Among numerous publications, Joel's work has been featured in National Geographic, Time, Life, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated. He has published several books including RARE: Portraits of America’s Endangered Species.
Kathy Moran, curator of the TREES exhibit, is National Geographic magazine’s first Senior Editor for natural history projects. A 33-year veteran of the Society, Kathy has been producing projects about terrestrial and underwater ecosystems for the magazine since 1990.
About the Annual TREES Events
The annual TREES exhibit is a hallmark of LOOK3. Each year, the TREES exhibit transforms Charlottesville's historic center into an immersive cultural space. Featuring leading national photographers dedicated to natural history subjects, the TREES photos are suspended in the trees that line the pedestrian corridor. TREES exhibits celebrate the natural world as they promote environmental awareness and conservation.
The TREES Talk, given by the TREES artist, is an insightful, environmentally focused presentation that takes place in The Paramount Theater. From the secret mating rituals of birds to the habits of the rarest species on earth, TREES talks are thrilling adventures that take us into the heart of our natural world.
LOOK3 wishes to acknowledge the long-term support of Darlene and Jeffrey Anderson who helped to realize the TREES events in the very beginning and have supported them ever since. Thank you.
Each year, LOOK3 donates complimentary tickets to area schoolchildren and nonprofits as part of its community outreach program. And, as an addition to the LOOK3 mentorship program, this year’s TREES events will include a fast-paced, interactive workshop for high school photography students on June 17th, providing a rare opportunity to work with a leading national photographer. The workshop will be underwritten and students will be nominated by their teachers.
